Gun Belt Width Guide: 1½" vs 1¾" and Pant Loops

Picking a gun belt isn’t only steel-core vs stiff leather. Width decides whether the strap feeds your pant loops and whether your holster clips or belt slots will accept it.

1) Why 1½" is the default

Most jeans and work pants are built around 1½" belts. That’s why our 1½" Wide Belts collection is a top landing page—and why most gun belts and holster belt slots assume 1½".

If you already wear a ~1½" work or jeans belt every day, start there for a gun belt or steel-core too. Matching the width you already run through your loops is the lowest-friction choice.

SKU note: Available widths vary by product. Always confirm the width on the product page before you order—don’t assume every gun belt SKU offers both.

2) When 1¾" makes sense (and when it won’t)

1¾" can make sense when:

  • Your work pants or tactical jeans have open / wide loops that already take a fat strap
  • You want a wider footprint under a heavy OWB load or tool + holster combo
  • You’re shopping 1¾" Wide Belts for heavy jobsite pants

1¾" often won’t fit when:

  • Dress pants or slim casual trousers with narrow loops (don’t force a gun-belt width into dress loops—use a dress belt for those pants)
  • Holster clips or belt slots rated for 1½" only—a wider strap can bind, fail to seat, or stress the clip
  • You’re guessing from a photo—measure the loop (below) instead

Wider is not automatically “more gun belt.” Stiffness comes from leather build / steel core; width has to clear hardware + loops.

3) How to check pant loops in 10 seconds

  1. Look at the belt you wear now on those pants.
  2. If it’s clearly ~1½" and feeds cleanly, stick with 1½" for CCW/work.
  3. If a 1½" belt scrapes, twists, or won’t feed, your loops may be narrow—drop width or change pants.
  4. If you already run a fat work strap and the loops swallow it, you may have room for 1¾"—still verify holster slots.

Optional quick measure: slip a ruler or the end of a tape across the inside of a belt loop opening. You need clearance for the leather plus a little feed room—not a friction fit.

4) Holster belt-slot / clip rating

Before you upsize width:

  • Check your holster maker’s belt slot or clip width rating
  • A holster built for 1½" may not accept a 1¾" strap cleanly

Phone + firearm on the same belt is common for working people. Size width for the strictest piece of hardware on the belt.

5) Quick decision

  1. Jeans / work pants + typical holster? → 1½" → shop Gun Belts or 1½" Wide Belts
  2. Need max anti-roll? → same width decision, then Steel Core Gun Belts
  3. Open loops / confirmed 1¾" holster slots? → 1¾" Wide Belts—verify on the PDP
