Big & Tall Belt Sizing Guide: Measure Right for Extended Sizes

Shopping Big & Tall Belts is the right move when you need extended lengths—but the measuring rules don’t change just because the number is bigger. Full-grain leather still has to land on a middle hole, clear your pant loops, and match the size dropdown on the product page.

1) Measure a belt that fits today (best method)

At larger sizes, vanity tags and five-year-old “I wear a 46” memories cause the most returns. Use a belt you actually wear now:

  1. Lay it flat and fully extended.
  2. Measure in inches from the hole you use most to the fold where the leather wraps the buckle.
  3. Do not include the buckle.
  4. That number is your belt size. If it’s odd, order the next even size (example: 49" → order 50).

Why this matters for Big & Tall: pant brands cut differently in the 40s–50s+, and stretch jeans lie more than stiff denim. Your belt size is the leather wrap length—not the number on your jeans.

Tip: If you carry a phone holster, tool pouch, or IWB holster most days, measure with that load in mind. Extra gear can shift where the buckle sits.

2) No good belt? Soft-tape + pants+2 (with caveats)

If you don’t have a belt that fits:

  1. Put on the pants (and shirt style) you’ll wear most.
  2. Run a soft tape through the belt loops at the height you wear a belt.
  3. Keep it snug—not cinched, not loose.
  4. Round odd results up to the next even belt size.

Pants + 2 rule of thumb: many men land near pants waist + 2" (e.g., 48 pants → try 50 belt). That matches what many YourTack PDPs say—and it matches our general sizing chart.

Caveats at extended sizes:

  • High-rise vs low-slung jeans can move you a full size.
  • Thick work shirts worn outside the belt need more length than a bare-waist tape.
  • “Vanity sizing” still applies in big sizes—don’t skip the tape.
  • Between two even sizes after measuring? Prefer the size that puts you near a middle hole.

3) Always verify the size dropdown on the product page

YourTack stocks many styles in Big & Tall Belts. Available lengths vary by SKU. Some work and ranger belts go well into the 50s–60 range on specific products—others stop earlier.

Do not assume every belt in the collection goes to the same max size. Open the product page and check the size dropdown before you order. If the size you measured isn’t listed, email belts@yourtack.com with the product link and your measured inches—we’ll help you find a style that carries it.

4) Stiff gun belts and heavy work belts don’t stretch into size

Full-grain work belts and gun belts are built stiff on purpose. A steel-core or thick harness strap will not “break in” into a longer size the way a cheap stretch web belt might.

  • Order the measured size on day one.
  • Stiffness doesn’t change length math—it just means a short belt stays short.

Same rule for everyday 1½" Wide Belts—get length right; don’t buy short hoping leather will grow.

5) Width still has to fit your loops

Extended length doesn’t change width rules. Most jeans and work pants take 1½"; dress pants often need narrower. Confirm your current belt width or loop opening before you order a wider strap.

6) Quick checklist before you hit Add to Cart

  1. Measured from preferred hole → buckle fold (no buckle length).
  2. Odd → next even.
  3. Verified that exact size exists on the PDP dropdown.
  4. Width matches your pant loops.
  5. Gun/work/steel-core: sized for today’s load, not “it’ll stretch.”
